The webpage “DJI Matrice 300 RTK commercial drone” from Avetics Global (n.d) advertises the Matrice 300 RTK drone. The drone is packed with many features, consisting of a transmission system, three-propeller emergency landing system and rugged design of its body. The webpage “DJI Matrice 300 RTK commercial drone” (Avetics, n.d) mentioned that the transmission system on the DJI Matrice 300 RTK commercial drone is the latest OcuSync Enterprise (DJI enterprise, 2020). The transmission system enables transmission up to 15km away (Aventics, n.d). The transmission system has real-time auto-switching between frequencies of 2.4GHz and 5.8 GHz (Aventics, n.d). For secure data transmission, the transmission system does AES-256 encryption (Aventics, n.d). Besides the transmission system, the Matrice 300 RTK drone has a three-propeller emergency landing system. The drone features IP45 ingress protection rating and an operating temperature of -20°C to 40 °C. (DJI, n.d). With the latest OcuSync Enterprise transmission system, three-propeller emergency landing system and rugged body design, the Matrice 300 RTK drone is a reliable and safe drone for missions.

One such feature is the OcuSync Enterprise. By having real-time switching between the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies the transmission system can avoid the already crowded 2.4GHz spectrum in urban areas and utilise the underused 5.8GHz band according to Hays et al. (2014). The 5.8GHz band is an improvement over the 2.4Ghz band where it faces less congestion and thus lesser interferences and increase reliability (Dolińska et al., 2017). Over long distances, the 5.8Ghz frequency faces greater loss than the 2.4Ghz frequency (Çabuk, 2020). For long distances, the 2.4GHz frequency is stronger than the 5.8GHz frequency, making the 2.4GHz frequency more reliable than 5.8GHz frequency. OcuSync Enterprise transmission system can use the advantages of both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies to ensure reliable and smooth signal transmission. A reliable signal transmission between the remote and the Matrice 300 RTK drone ensures that commands given out will not be lost during mission critical tasks.

The OcuSync Enterprise transmission system comes with AES-256 encryption. It is impossible to crack AES-256 according to Rao et al. (2017). No one will be able to hijack the controls of the drone with the uncrackable encryption of the transmission system. The transmission system allows only the intended operator to operate the drone. An operator can have a peace of mind that while conducting any tasks with the drone, no unintended individual can disrupt the operator’s mission.

The IP45 ingress protection rating of the Matrice 300 RTK drone according to DJI (n.d), provides protection for the drone during rainy weather. The rating certifies that the Matrice 300 RTK drone is being protected against any solid foreign object of 1.0mm and greater and water being splash against the drone from any direction. The IP rating of the Matrice 300 RTK drone suggest that any mission will not be interrupted by light and medium rain (Kinisely, 2020).

A feature that makes the drone safe is the three-propeller emergency landing system. According to DJI Enterprise (2020), other drones with the quadcopter design similar to the Matrice 300 RTK drone are unable to fly with only three motors. If one motor fails, a quadcopter type drone will crash in to the ground immediately. When one of the four propeller fails on the Matrice 300 RTK drone, the drone will automatically enter the Three-Propeller Emergency Landing mode. The mode will first detect a loss of power in a motor or if a motor is rotating at an unintended speed. Next, the flight control system will take over the drone, ensure stability of the drone before putting the drone into an emergency survival mode. The emergency survival mode ensures the drone lands in a suitable location and prevents damage to the Matrice 300 RTK drone and/or people.

An issue with the Matrice 300 RTK drone is the drone has an inverted propeller design according to Steel CIty Drones (2020). The propellers are located near the landing gear of the drone as the arm and body of the drone is above the propellers. With the propeller being located below the propeller arm and near the landing gear, hand launching and recovery of the Matrice 300 RTK drone is impossible. In an event where the landing gear fails, the propeller will be the first to touch the ground when landing which will damage the propeller and possibly anything or anyone nearby. Because of the inverted propeller design, any mission that takes place in areas with poor landing and launching spaces might be unsafe or even impossible.    

In conclusion, the OcuSync Enterprise transmission system with AES 256 encryption, three-propeller emergency landing system and rugged design each contributes to the reliability and safety of the Matrice 300 RTK drone when it is performing any missions.
